Editorial reading

Conceived as an Italianate terraced sanctuary in the North Downs, Albury Park represents one of the earliest and most daring Baroque landscape projects in England. John Evelyn engineered a dramatic 160-metre quarter-mile terrace cut into the greensand hillside, accompanied by an extraordinary 150-metre subterranean tunnel known as the Crypta, carved directly through the hill to channel cool air, light, and natural spring water into a Roman-inspired bath and bathing pool. The terraced grounds overlook a formal canalised stretch of the River Tillingbourne. In the early nineteenth century, the estate was purchased by banker and parliamentarian Henry Drummond, who engaged architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin in 1846 to remodel the mansion with its sixty distinctive decorative brick chimneys, while landscape architect William Andrews Nesfield refined the pleasure grounds with sweeping lawns and formal parterres. The pleasure grounds preserve veteran specimen trees including seventeenth-century yews, sweet chestnuts, and exotic conifers planted during Victorian botanical expansions. A long avenue of pleached limes and extensive woodland walks frame the terraced hillside. Protected at Grade I under NHLE List Entry 1000299, Albury Park preserves John Evelyn's pioneering hydraulic and terraced vision as a monument of early English horticultural theory and landscape engineering.

Recommendation
