Bergen Museum Garden: an outdoor continuation of the museum

Muséhagen brings the university’s botanical collections into the centre of Bergen. Its relatively compact setting encourages close looking: beds, water and museum buildings form a sequence in which the idea of an outdoor exhibition remains readily apparent.

From the source

The Museum Garden, Muséhagen, lies beside the University Museum in central Bergen. It was laid out in 1897–1899 to a plan by botanist Jørgen Brunchorst, as an outdoor continuation of the museum’s botanical exhibitions. The protected garden holds living collections of perennials, shrubs and trees, with glasshouse collections as well. It supports research, teaching, public engagement and recreation. The University of Bergen publishes separate seasonal opening times for the garden and limited visiting hours for the glasshouse. This central garden is distinct from the university’s collections at Milde.

Editorial reading

The garden’s position beside the museum makes its purpose unusually legible. Plants are encountered in a designed setting that invites both visual enjoyment and enquiry, extending the institution’s work beyond the interior galleries. The architecture provides a backdrop without becoming the only focus.

A slow route through selected beds can reveal the variety of approaches within a small area. Useful plants, rock planting and larger woody specimens ask for different kinds of attention. Labels connect them to botanical identities and histories of cultivation. The resulting visit works best as a series of observations, with the garden’s spatial arrangement helping those discoveries accumulate into a coherent experience.

Recommendation

Consult UiB’s current seasonal gate times and check glasshouse access separately; an open garden does not imply an open glasshouse. Choose a few collections for close study rather than rushing between every bed. Keep to paths around small or delicate plants. If combining this visit with Milde, treat them as separate destinations with different travel and facility arrangements.
