Editorial reading

Continuous ownership by the Van Wassenaer and Van Heeckeren van Wassenaer families for nearly seven centuries enabled Twickel to evolve into one of the most culturally cohesive estate landscapes in the Netherlands. The grounds immediately surrounding the Renaissance moated manor retain formal parterres and symmetrical allées reflecting French Baroque ideals. In the early nineteenth century, leading Dutch landscape architect Jan David Zocher transformed the outer grounds into an English romantic park, curving water channels and framing picturesque woodland clearings. Between 1885 and 1890, celebrated German landscape gardener Carl Eduard Petzold expanded the design into an extensive pleasure ground and arboretum, introducing diverse exotic conifers, specimen rhododendrons, and serpentine lakeside drives. The historic Orangery, constructed in 1833, shelters a premier botanical citrus collection including centuries-old Seville orange trees and pomegranates that are placed outdoors throughout the formal terrace during summer. Adjacent lies the Rock Garden, established in the twentieth century by Baroness M.A. van Heeckeren van Wassenaer, renowned for its alpine and woodland flora. Today, Twickel is maintained by the Twickel Foundation, preserving working watermills, timber estate farms with distinctive black-and-white shutters, formal topiary gardens, and mature English landscape vistas.
