Editorial reading

Constructed in 1385 by architect Bartolino da Novara as a massive brick fortress surrounded by water-filled moats to protect the ruling d'Este family, the Castello Estense was transformed throughout the sixteenth century into a magnificent ducal Renaissance court. A crowning achievement of this transformation was the construction of the Giardino degli Aranci (Hanging Garden of the Oranges), established around 1554 by Duke Alfonso II d'Este. Perched on a roof terrace atop the southern battlements, the hanging garden allowed the ducal family to enjoy fragrant botanical greenery and fresh breezes while gazing across the bustling city of Ferrara and the water-filled moats below. The garden features citrus trees in traditional terracotta pots—including bitter oranges, lemons, and bergamots—arranged along a covered loggia and open stone terrace. The surrounding walls are draped in climbing jasmine, ivy, and wisteria, while small geometric flower beds provide seasonal floral colour. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995 as part of Renaissance Ferrara, the hanging garden of Castello Estense represents an extraordinary Renaissance technical and poetic feat: creating an elevated citrus grove atop formidable medieval fortress battlements.
