The birthplace of La Fayette keeps its gardens, listed with the château in 1989, and since 2025 also its kitchen garden, great pond and laundry with their hydraulic works.

Château de Chavaniac is a château at Chavaniac-Lafayette, Haute-Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The recorded building campaigns date from the 14th and 18th centuries. It is protected as a monument historique at the second level (inscrit). Details are drawn from the Base Mérimée of the French Ministry of Culture.

La Fayette was born here on 6 September 1757. The château, partly destroyed by fire in 1701 and restored by Vaudoyer in 1791, was seized and sold in 1793 and bought back by La Fayette’s aunt; after 1920 the American Committee that acquired it added a concrete keep and refitted the interior. The 1989 listing covers the château and its gardens together with a long list of decorated rooms. In May 2025 the protection was extended to the spaces of the kitchen garden, the great pond and the laundry, with their built elements, their ground and their hydraulic installations.
Recommendation
The 2025 listing is recent proof that the working side of the garden — potager, pond, laundry and their water — is as much the monument as the house.
