The parterre and arcaded terraces of Fumel
Rebuilt largely in the seventeenth century around a fourteenth-century keep, Fumel is known for its Louis XIV terrace on arcades, which encloses the gardens; parterre and terraces were listed with the house in 1951.

Château de Fumel is a château at Fumel, Lot-et-Garonne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The recorded building campaigns date from the 14th and 17th centuries. It is protected as a monument historique at the second level (inscrit). Details are drawn from the Base Mérimée of the French Ministry of Culture.

The record describes an enfilade of gilded salons opening onto a terrace bordered with Louis XIV balusters. That terrace rests on arcades and surrounds the gardens; a Louis XVI-style balustrade at roof level was added in the nineteenth century. Inside the keep a monumental stair with a wrought-iron rail survives. The 1951 listing names the south building, the keep, the west wing, the parterre and the terraces.
Recommendation
The parterre is read from above: the arcaded terrace was built to look down on it.
