Above the Dordogne at Vézac, the manor of Marqueyssac is best known for the clipped boxwood of its gardens on the rock; the record, however, protects only the house.

Château de Marqueyssac is a château at Vézac, Dordogne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The recorded building campaigns date from the 15th and 17th centuries. It is protected as a monument historique at the second level (inscrit). Details are drawn from the Base Mérimée of the French Ministry of Culture.

The Mérimée record is about the building: a manor-château with outbuildings, a main block with two pavilions in return, a round stair tower on the west face and substantial ramparts, listed for its façades and roofs in 1948. It does not describe the gardens. The rock gardens with their thousands of clipped box, photographed here, are documented by the image and by the site’s own presence in the Base Mérimée as a garden, not by the record’s text.
Recommendation
Whatever the record omits, the box on the cliff is the reason people climb to Marqueyssac.
