Édouard André’s landscape park at Montertreau
The neo-Gothic house of 1844 at Parigné-le-Pôlin is modest; the reason for its protection is the landscape park laid out in 1877 by Édouard André, who described it in his 1879 treatise on the composition of parks and gardens.

Château de Montertreau is a château at Parigné-le-Pôlin, Sarthe, in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The recorded building campaigns date from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is protected as a monument historique at the higher of the two levels (classé). Details are drawn from the Base Mérimée of the French Ministry of Culture.

The record says so plainly: the major interest of the property lies in the park designed in 1877 by the landscape architect Édouard André and described in his Traité général de la composition des parcs et jardins of 1879. The 2011 listing covers the house, the built elements of the park — wash-house, lodge, stables, woodshed, orangery, garage, aviary — and the landscape composition with its rockwork, low walls, steps and the enclosure walls of the kitchen garden; in 2012 the park itself, with its rockwork, walls, steps, masonry pond and kitchen-garden walls, was classified.
Recommendation
A textbook park in the literal sense: André used it to illustrate his own treatise.
