Vayres on the Dordogne — a fourteenth-century fortress made residential in the sixteenth century and given its monumental façade and great stair in the seventeenth — had its gardens, with their built parts, classified in 2001.

Château de Vayres is a château at Vayres, Gironde, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The recorded building campaigns date from the 14th, 16th, 17th and 20th centuries. It is protected as a monument historique at the higher of the two levels (classé). Details are drawn from the Base Mérimée of the French Ministry of Culture.

The record summarises three great campaigns: a moated fortress in the fourteenth century, a sixteenth-century rebuilding with richly decorated façades and new interiors, and the seventeenth-century monumental façade and great staircase. The 2001 classification, amended in 2002, covers the façades and roofs of château, mill and dependencies, and the gardens with their built parts across a dozen parcels. The terraced stair between clipped yews seen today belongs to those classified gardens.
Recommendation
Vayres is one of the few Gironde châteaux whose gardens are classified in their own right.
