The gardens of Villandry
A researched recreation of formal garden traditions, where vegetables, ornamental planting and water are organised into distinct spaces.

From the source
Villandry stands in Touraine, west of Tours. Its Renaissance château and gardens have undergone significant changes over successive centuries. Joachim Carvallo and Ann Coleman acquired the estate in 1906 and restored the house; Carvallo recreated the gardens between 1908 and 1918 using historical plans, archaeological traces and garden literature. The result is a synthesis of garden traditions, rather than an untouched sixteenth-century survival. Later generations continued to develop the grounds, adding a herb garden and a sun garden. The château offers an elevated perspective over the ornamental planting and kitchen garden. Its value lies in the relationship between the residence, the designed landscape and the history of the restoration that made the present ensemble.

Editorial reading
Geometry sustained by cultivation
Villandry’s most useful lesson is that an apparently historic garden can be a modern work of research and reinvention. The official account describes the evidence used for its recreation and the contributions of several designers. Read the visible geometry with that history in mind.
At ground level, attention shifts from the plan to the plants that sustain it. The ornamental kitchen garden makes this particularly clear: crops have to serve both cultivation and composition. Compare that productive pattern with the ornamental salons and the quieter water garden. The later herb and sun gardens show that the ensemble continued to evolve. An elevated view supplies the diagram; the paths reveal the labour, texture and seasonal change within it.
Recommendation
Take an overall view from an official elevated point if your route allows, then return to the kitchen garden at path level. Compare a few neighbouring beds closely before moving to the ornamental and water gardens. Consult the estate’s seasonal information and garden route rather than expecting the same planting throughout the year. Check whether your ticket includes the château and which viewpoints require stairs. In a wider Loire journey, pair Villandry’s formal organisation with Rivau’s more narrative garden rooms on a separate, comfortably paced visit.
