The terraced gardens of Les Milandes
Begun in 1489 for Claude de Cardaillac and bought in 1947 by Joséphine Baker, Les Milandes stands on a terrace above the Dordogne, with garden levels held up by buttressed walls and monumental stairs, and a chapel at the end of the park.

Château des Milandes is a château at Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, Dordogne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The recorded building campaigns date from the 15th, 19th and 20th centuries. Its architecture is recorded as Renaissance architecture. It is protected as a monument historique at the second level (inscrit). Details are drawn from the Base Mérimée of the French Ministry of Culture.

The record follows the house from 1489 through its sale as national property at the Revolution, the restorations and additions by Henri Laffilée after a fire in 1890, and Joséphine Baker’s interior alterations to house her adopted children. A terrace serves as the château’s base; around it the levels of the gardens are shored up by buttressed walls with monumental staircases, and the chapel stands at the far end of the park. The château, the chai, the former stables and the whole of the park were listed in 2009. The boxwood parterres photographed here occupy those garden levels.
