The parterres and park of Craon

Built in the 1770s with its chapel and orangery, the château of Craon in the Mayenne had its front parterres classified in 1971 and its whole park, with the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century estate buildings, listed in 1990.

Château et parc is a château at Craon, Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The recorded building campaigns date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. It is protected as a monument historique at the higher of the two levels (classé). Details are drawn from the Base Mérimée of the French Ministry of Culture.

The record dates château, chapel and orangery to the second half of the eighteenth century, 1773–1776. The 1971 classification names, alongside the façades and the decorated ground-floor rooms, the parterres in front of the château. The 1990 listing takes in the medieval remains — a casemate with its Romanesque vestige and the south wall forming a terrace — and the park proper with its pleasure pavilion symmetrical to the chapel, the riding-school and stud, the laundry and wash-house, the icehouse, the dovecote-bakehouse, the porter’s lodge and the gates of Laval and Bel Air, and the two masonry bridges of the domain.

Recommendation

Two protections, two gardens: the formal parterres before the house, and the landscape park with its follies behind.
