Editorial reading

Conceived at the very dawn of the English Landscape Movement, Corby Castle is celebrated as one of Britain's earliest naturalistic river-cliff landscapes. In 1706, Thomas Howard inherited the medieval tower house and began transforming the sheer red Permian sandstone cliffs of the River Eden gorge into a sublime walking circuit, preceding the celebrated landscapes of William Kent and Alexander Pope. Howard engineered the Great Walk along the riverbank, cutting paths directly into the sandstone cliffs and constructing a monumental Baroque stone Cascade fed by hillside streams. The cascade terminates at a stone water basin flanked by life-size sandstone statues of Polyphemus and Acis, while nearby stands the Temple (1729), an austere classical Doric summerhouse commanding panoramic views of the swirling river rapids and weir. The walks feature rock-hewn caves, romantic hermitages, historic salmon coops dating back to medieval monastic rights, and towering mixed woodlands of oak, beech, and yew clinging to the vertical river gorge. Protected at Grade I under NHLE List Entry 1000662, Corby Castle represents an exceptionally rare and intact survivor of the early eighteenth-century Proto-Picturesque movement, praised by Alexander Pope, David Hume, and Thomas Pennant.
