Dømmesmoen: a garden landscape with horticultural roots

Dømmesmoen combines the pleasures of a planted park with a history of horticultural teaching. Around its pond, the landscape moves between garden areas, mature trees and the edges of woodland, offering a visit in which cultivation and local terrain can be considered together.

From the source

Dømmesmoen lies outside Grimstad and is owned by the municipality. The park developed systematically after the establishment of the state horticultural school in 1923. Its planted areas include trees, shrubs, roses, perennials, seasonal flowers and demonstration beds. A pond forms a central feature, with the landscape extending towards woodland and cultivated land. The site also contains cultural remains and is home to the Norwegian Horticultural Museum. Grimstad municipality states that the park is open throughout the year; museum exhibitions and facilities have separate arrangements.

Editorial reading

The site’s teaching history gives its planting a particular interest. Demonstration beds and labelled plants encourage the visitor to look at practical horticulture as well as appearance: the choices through which a garden is made, understood and maintained.

The pond provides a useful spatial reference while the surrounding routes allow a broader reading of the setting. Moving towards woodland changes the experience from designed beds to a less formal landscape, without losing the sense of continuity. The horticultural museum adds another opportunity to connect what is visible outdoors with the work and knowledge behind it, provided its separate opening programme fits the visit.

Recommendation

Use the municipality’s map to plan a park walk, and check the Horticultural Museum’s programme separately if you want to enter exhibitions. Allow time for both the planted areas and the pond; longer woodland routes are an additional option rather than a requirement. Consult current accessibility information for your chosen route and follow marked paths around planting and cultural remains.
