Editorial reading

Acquired in 1792 by Queen Charlotte, consort of King George III, as a private domestic retreat for herself and her unmarried daughters, Frogmore was transformed into an idyllic picturesque haven. Queen Charlotte, an enthusiastic botanist who corresponded with Linnaeus, collaborated with royal botanist William Aiton of Kew and Major William Price to lay out an intimate serpentine landscape filled with rare global plantings. A four-acre serpentine lake winds through the grounds, encircling planted islands and reflecting romantic garden buildings designed by architect James Wyatt, including the Gothic Ruin (1793), the Queen's Tea House, and the Hermitage. The grounds also feature the ornate Indian Kiosk, carved from white marble and presented to Queen Victoria in 1858 following the Indian Rebellion. Frogmore is the sacred resting place of British monarchs: within the gardens stand the Duchess of Kent's Mausoleum and the monumental Royal Mausoleum of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (1862–1871), designed by Ludwig Gruner with its magnificent Italianate granite dome, alongside the Royal Burial Ground. Protected at Grade I under NHLE List Entry 1000587, Frogmore remains an exceptionally private and atmospheric royal sanctuary, celebrated for its historic American shrub collections, mature weeping willows, and solemn nineteenth-century imperial mausoleums.
