Editorial reading
Perched on steep wooded bluffs above the River Derwent, Gibside is one of the most magnificent and politically charged eighteenth-century forest landscapes in northern Britain. Wealthy coal baron George Bowes transformed his ancestral estate into an epic classical walking circuit that celebrated Whig ideals of British liberty and commercial enterprise. The grand axis of the landscape is a majestic half-mile turf avenue running east to west across the plateau. At its eastern end rises the 140-foot Column to Liberty (1750–1757), designed by Daniel Garrett and surmounted by a colossal gilded twelve-foot statue of British Liberty holding a staff and Phrygian cap. At the western terminus stands James Paine's sublime Palladian Chapel (1760–1812), an architectural tour de force featuring a three-tier mahogany pulpit and central dome. The northern woodland slopes overlook the Derwent ravine and feature the elegant Gothic Banqueting House (1751) perched above an octagonal reflecting pool, the ruins of the Jacobean hall, and the walled kitchen garden. Ancient woodland walks wind through oak and beech canopies populated by red kites. Protected at Grade I under NHLE List Entry 1000508 and rescued from ruin by the National Trust, Gibside is celebrated for the monumental scale of its forest vistas and architectural grandeur.
Recommendation
Walk the awe-inspiring half-mile forest avenue connecting the 140-foot gilded Column to Liberty and James Paine's neoclassical Palladian Chapel above the Derwent Valley.
