Jardin des plantes de Nantes

The City of Nantes acquired the Jardin des Plantes in 1820. It opened partially to the public in 1829, with full public access established later. The departmental archives describe its English-style landscape and the addition of glasshouses, a palm house and a rose garden towards the end of the nineteenth century.

Editorial reading

Editorial interpretation: the garden’s history combines botanical cultivation with a gradual opening to public recreation. Reading the landscape and glasshouses together offers a way to consider both strands without treating the garden as the product of one founding moment.

Recommendation

Compare the garden layout with its glasshouse structures and consult current municipal visitor information before travelling. Historical public opening does not establish present access to every glasshouse or activity.
