Editorial reading

Continuous succession through the noble Van Wassenaer and Steengracht families preserved Duivenvoorde's architectural and landscape heritage intact over eight centuries. The square moated castle, remodelled in 1631 in the Dutch Classicist style, sits as an architectural focal point within a picturesque pastoral setting. Around 1840, Baron Nicolaas Johan Steengracht commissioned Jan David Zocher Jr. to transform the existing seventeenth-century formal canals and geometric lanes into an expansive English landscape park. Zocher introduced curving waterways, undulating lawns, and strategically placed tree clumps that frame views of the castle from multiple angles. The 26-hectare park preserves rare historic features including a Victorian game larder, an 18th-century tea pavilion, an authentic Dutch carriage house, and ancient veteran beech and oak trees dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. An extensive system of walking trails leads visitors through water meadows, wooded groves, and peaceful pond shores. Today, Duivenvoorde remains a model of sustainable estate conservation, welcoming visitors to experience the gentle contours and reflective water surfaces of Zocher's romantic landscape.
