Milde: botanical collections in Bergen’s woodland landscape

At Milde, south of Bergen, botanical collections unfold through woodland and themed garden areas. The arboretum and neighbouring botanical garden make an expansive destination in which the visitor can alternate between the close study of plants and the experience of a planted landscape.

From the source

The Arboretum at Milde lies south of Bergen and forms part of the University Museum’s living plant collections. It brings together trees and shrubs from Norway and other regions. The university identifies rhododendron collections, a heather garden, historic Bergen garden plants at Blondehushagen and a rose collection among its principal features. Bergen Botanical Garden is immediately adjacent, allowing the two collections to be visited together. The university states that the outdoor areas are open throughout the year and admission is free.

Editorial reading

Milde rewards a visit organised around transitions rather than a list of specimens. Moving from trees to rhododendrons, roses or historic garden plants changes both the scale of attention and the character of the setting. The landscape provides continuity between collections with quite different purposes.

This is also an instructive place to think about how plants travel and become established in cultivation. Native trees, introduced shrubs and inherited garden varieties occupy the same wider ground, but tell different stories. Reading the labels while remaining attentive to shelter, light and woodland edges helps connect the botanical collection with the conditions that sustain it. A second visit in another season would reveal a different emphasis.

Recommendation

Use the university’s current map to distinguish the arboretum from the adjacent botanical garden and choose a manageable route through the collections. Prioritise one or two themes, such as rhododendrons or historic Bergen plants, while allowing time for the woodland paths. Outdoor access is free according to UiB; check the current visitor information separately for facilities, events and any temporary path restrictions.
