Editorial reading

Constructed from 1696 by Landgrave Charles of Hesse-Kassel and Italian master builder Giovanni Francesco Guerniero, Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe covers 240 hectares on the slopes of the Habichtswald. The park represents a triumphant synthesis of Baroque absolutist monumentalism and late eighteenth-century Romantic landscape gardening. At the summit sits the monumental Octagon, crowned by an 8.3-metre copper statue of Hercules. Below, the famous Water Displays (Wasserspiele) operate entirely without mechanical pumps, utilizing natural hydrostatic pressure: water flows over massive stone cascades, through the Steinhöfer Waterfall, across the Devil's Bridge, plunges over the Aqueduct, and culminates in the Great Fountain, which shoots a majestic 50-metre water jet skyward in front of Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. In the late eighteenth century, Landgraves Frederick II and William IX engaged architects Heinrich Christoph Jussow and Daniel August Schwarzkopf to transform the surrounding slopes into an English landscape park. Jussow added romantic fabriques including the medieval-revival Löwenburg castle ruin and the Great Aqueduct. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013 as an outstanding example of monumental hydraulic engineering, Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe offers dramatic panoramic views across Kassel and pristine historic woodland walks.
