The gardens of Chenonceau
Formal parterres, a landscape park and working flower plots connect the château on the Cher to several different traditions of garden making.

Chenonceau lies beside and across the Cher in Indre-et-Loire. The present château began with the building campaign of Thomas Bohier and Catherine Briçonnet between 1513 and 1517; the Tour des Marques survives from the earlier complex. Later work associated with Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de’ Medici extended the relationship between the residence, river and gardens. The château contains collections of furniture, tapestries and paintings. Its grounds include the gardens named for Diane and Catherine, a landscape park and a productive flower garden supporting arrangements inside the house. The official account identifies later interventions in the gardens, including Achille Duchêne’s layout at Diane’s garden, so the visible ensemble should not be described as wholly unchanged since the sixteenth century.

Compare the gardens, then follow their work
The gardens named for Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de’ Medici make a useful pair. Compare their scale, enclosure and views towards the château rather than simply counting their flower beds. The water and the building provide a shared setting, but the experience of each garden is different.
The official garden history records later design work, which matters when reading their apparent Renaissance coherence. Beyond the principal parterres, the Green Garden changes the pace towards a landscape setting. The flower garden then reveals cultivation with a practical purpose: plants grown outside contribute to the interiors. That movement from display to production gives a garden-led visit more substance than a circuit of the famous views alone.
Aanbeveling
Begin with the two principal gardens and compare each with the château as a visual anchor. Continue to the landscape areas and flower plots that are open on your date. Ask the visitor service about seasonal garden routes and which working areas can be seen. Judge the visit by structure, planting and horticultural work as well as peak blossom. Allow enough time outside after the château interior; in wet weather, choose suitable footwear and check route conditions through the park.
