Nygårdsparken: Bergen’s landscape park across the seasons

Nygårdsparken offers a change of pace from Bergen’s dense streets. Its sloping lawns, mature trees and water features create a sequence of changing views rather than a single formal prospect.

Nygårdsparken occupies sloping ground between Nygård and Møhlenpris in Bergen. Its creation followed the establishment of a park association in 1880 by physicians Joachim Georg Wiesener and Klaus Hanssen. Bergen municipality identifies the English landscape style as a defining quality of the park. Recent rehabilitation has included paths, planting, drainage and water features; a recreation of the historic lower-park fountain was installed in April 2024. The municipality maintains the grounds as a public park and meeting place.

Redactionele duiding

The park is best understood through movement. A route between its higher and lower areas reveals how topography organises the landscape: trees interrupt and frame views, while paths connect open spaces with more enclosed edges. This is the kind of garden where the transitions matter as much as an individual feature.

Its recent rehabilitation also makes it interesting as a living public landscape. Restoring a historic fountain and renewing drainage, surfaces and planting are different kinds of work, yet together they help sustain the park’s everyday use. The result should be read as an evolving landscape, with historic design intentions and contemporary needs occupying the same ground. Seasonal change is especially evident in the canopy and lawns. The winter photograph accompanying this dossier records one condition of the park, rather than suggesting that flowers or water displays remain constant throughout the year.

Aanbeveling

Use the municipality’s current park information to check works or event restrictions. Allow time to move between the upper and lower areas rather than only crossing one edge. Choose footwear for sloping paths, and check conditions after heavy rain or in winter; the historical photograph shows a snowy season.
