Oslo Botanical Garden: living collections and the memory of gardens

Tøyen’s botanical garden offers several scales of discovery within Oslo: trees and scientific collections, useful plants and the more intimate memory of domestic gardens. Oldemors hage is a particularly rewarding focus, showing how familiar perennials can become objects of conservation and cultural attention.

Oslo Botanical Garden is at Tøyen and is part of the University of Oslo’s Natural History Museum. The garden includes an arboretum, systematic and herb collections, an alpine garden and themed planting. Its Oldemors hage section opened in 2008 and conserves old perennial garden plants gathered from eastern Norway. The Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research describes that section as both a living gene bank and an accessible sensory garden. Its plants were selected for documented cultivation histories reaching back to the 1950s or earlier.

Redactionele duiding

The most distinctive reading of this garden begins with the relationship between scientific collection and everyday experience. A plant can be significant because of its botanical identity, but also because generations of gardeners have grown and shared it. Oldemors hage makes that second history visible.

Seen in this way, the garden becomes a place to consider continuity in cultivation. Beds, paths and familiar flowers provide an approachable setting, while labels reconnect plants with their origins. The wider botanical collections offer a useful counterpoint, shifting attention from inherited varieties to plant relationships and habitats. Combining both approaches makes for a more thoughtful visit than pursuing flowering highlights alone.

Aanbeveling

Include Oldemors hage in a wider walk through the outdoor collections, taking time to read the plant histories rather than treating the section as a generic flower garden. Consult the Natural History Museum for current gates, opening times and greenhouse access, which should be checked separately. Respect collection rules and keep to paths; these are living conservation holdings as well as a public garden.
