Ringve Botanical Garden: plant knowledge in a historic landscape

Ringve places scientific collections beside the atmosphere of a historic estate. A walk can move from the ordered relationships of flowering plants to old garden varieties and mature parkland, making this Trondheim garden a particularly clear introduction to several ways of arranging and understanding plants.

Ringve Botanical Garden is on the Lade peninsula, about three kilometres east of central Trondheim. Established by the university in 1973, it is managed by NTNU University Museum. Its living collections support research, teaching and the conservation of threatened species. The garden includes an arboretum, a systematic collection showing plant relationships, historic perennials and a Renaissance garden with herbs used locally since at least 1694. The estate’s nineteenth-century landscape park forms another distinct area. NTNU states that the garden is always open and entry is free.

Redactionele duiding

The garden’s appeal lies in its changes of emphasis. In one area, plants are arranged to explain relationships; elsewhere, their value lies in a history of cultivation or in the spatial character of trees and paths. Moving between these settings makes botanical classification feel less abstract.

Ringve also offers a productive contrast between collection and landscape. Labels invite close observation, while the historic park asks for a slower reading of canopy, slope and distance. These are complementary ways to experience a garden. Allowing both to shape the visit reveals the place as a working educational landscape with an inherited setting, rather than a sequence of decorative beds alone.

Aanbeveling

Choose a route through both the systematic collections and the historic park, reading labels as well as looking for seasonal colour. The garden has free access according to NTNU, but guided activities and special trails have their own schedules. Check the university’s practical information before visiting; the separate museum’s renovation closure should not be confused with closure of Ringve’s outdoor garden.
