The moats of Cinq-Mars

Razed on Richelieu’s orders after the execution of Henri de Ruzé d’Effiat in 1642, the fortress of Cinq-Mars keeps two towers and its sixteenth-century moats, crossed by a three-arched bridge.

Redactionele duiding

The record follows the site from its first known lord in 1050 to the demolition of 1642. What remains is the fifteenth-century guards’ lodging between two round towers, the east tower, the thirteenth-century south tower and the base of the late-twelfth-century keep, all crowned by a fanciful modern crenellation, and a triangular outwork called the Éperon. The moats were remade in the sixteenth century, and the drawbridge replaced by a fixed bridge of three arches. The two surviving towers and the moats with their bridge were classified in 1976. The Base Mérimée records a garden among the site’s features; the moats are the part of it the record describes.
