The gardens of Rivau
Contemporary gardens by Patricia Laigneau, where botanical collections, seasonal colour and imagined stories reshape the approach to a fortified château.

Bronfeiten
Château du Rivau stands at Lémeré, near Chinon in Indre-et-Loire. The estate’s history describes a fifteenth-century fortified residence built on the foundations of an earlier fortified house. The ensemble includes the château, Renaissance royal stables, a barn and a wine press. Restoration by the Laigneau family has accompanied the development of gardens and a programme of contemporary art. The current gardens are the work of Patricia Laigneau and are organised into distinct botanical and narrative spaces. These modern activities should be distinguished from the dating of the surviving buildings. Rivau combines architectural heritage with an actively maintained landscape; its gardens are neither incidental decoration nor evidence of a wholly surviving medieval planting scheme.

A sequence of encounters
Rivau invites a different pace from a single formal parterre. Its named gardens organise encounters with plants, shapes and stories, while the château remains a recurring point of orientation. Move between spaces and notice how each changes the mood of the next.
The estate presents botanical collections and a seasonal succession of flowering alongside the narrative names. That horticultural foundation is worth following: the garden is maintained through plant choices and work, not through storytelling alone. Contemporary art adds further interruptions and points of attention. Read these gardens as a modern creation beside a historic building, with each contributing its own period and purpose. Their contrast with Villandry is productive without making one garden tradition the measure of the other.
Aanbeveling
Consult the estate’s seasonal garden information, then choose a route that includes both open planted spaces and more enclosed rooms. Follow a few plant groups closely rather than trying to photograph every named garden. The appearance varies through the year, so use the garden’s structure and the château relationship as anchors. Confirm which art installations, paths and services are available on the day. Leave time to sit or pause where permitted; a garden-led visit benefits from a different rhythm than a rapid circuit of castle rooms.
