The terraces and gardens of Montrésor

On its rocky promontory above the Indrois, the château of Montrésor — a fortress of Foulques Nerra rebuilt in 1393 and 1493 and remade in the Troubadour taste after 1849 — was classified in 1996 with its two enceintes, its terraces and their gardens, in a landscape park.

Redactionele duiding

The record tells the succession: the fortress attributed to Foulques Nerra, the 1393 rebuilding for Jean IV de Bueil, the new house built by Ymbert de Bastarnay after 1493, of which only the central part survives, and the purchase in 1849 by the Polish count Xavier Branicki, whose descendants still live there. Branicki restored the enclosure wall, remodelled the outbuildings and gave the château its neo-Gothic envelope, furnishing it with Polish collections; his successors kept that nineteenth-century decor within a landscape park. The 1996 classification names the château, its dependencies, its two enceintes and the ground of the parcels, including the terraces and their gardens.

Aanbeveling

The terraces look down on the Indrois; the gardens on them are classified as part of the fortress, which is rare.
